Be better prepared to stand up for yourself!

Whether you are a kid or a teen or an adult, learning how to be more assertive and to stand up for yourself can make the world seem just a little less scary. It helps you feel more confident and safer at school, at work, at the park or out shopping. Self-defense isn’t just being able to physically protect yourself, but is also learning to pay attention to surroundings, to have a confident posture and to speak up assertively.

What Will We Do in a Basics Self Defense Class?

We offer women’s self-defense and bully/stranger danger training in a variety of ways:

  • Our regular taekwondo program
  • Clinics offered periodically; check our calendar
  • Schedule clinics for groups

Women's Self Defense Basics Programs!

You'll have fun and learn basic, easy to remember, skills to help you avoid, evade and have a better chance of defending yourself from unwanted attention or an attacker. You get to yell, punch and kick (you may be surprised at how good it feels to be able to hit things)

We do not use an attacker in a padded suit to scare you, and we don’t swear at you.

You aren’t expected to learn complicated moves that you would have to practice daily for years to be able to use.

This class is meant to be fun and at the same time make you more aware of your surroundings, help you avoid potentially dangerous situations and give you more confidence about using your voice and - if necessary - fighting back.We encourage you to try all the skills we are teaching but you are never forced or bullied into doing anything that makes you uncomfortable.

Bully Prevention and "Stranger Danger" Clinics!

Bullying – in person and online – seems to more and more prevalent, and we help kids & teens:

  • Understand the difference between bullying and someone just having one bad day

  • How they themselves may unintentionally be bullying others

  • The importance of talking with parents or another trusted adult if they are being bullied

  • How to use a confident body posture and a strong assertive voice

  • How to physically defend themselves and what those boundaries are

“Strange Danger” – though we don’t use the term “Stranger Danger” because kids tend to think of strangers as only scary looking people, and as someone they have never met before. When we ask “what is a stranger” every child will parrot in a singing voice “a stranger's someone we don’t know!”

Our focus is on the family rules and always getting permission from parents (or the person currently in charge of you).
We talk about the cashier we see every week at the grocery, the bank teller, the person who mows the grass, the mail carrier, etc. and how we feel like we know these people. But if we would see any of them in our neighborhood or at the park we don’t go with them anywhere, but always respond with “I need to ask (my mom, my dad, whoever is in charge right now).”

If someone insists that the child accompany them, we practice techniques to get away and to defend ourselves, while using a very assertive strong (not a shrill or screamy) voice to attract attention.

Let’s work together to help our Hilliard community feel even safer!
